A warm, freshly swept fireplace fire in a Cincinnati home

Cincinnati doesn’t have one kind of chimney — it has several, often just a few blocks apart. In Hyde Park, Mount Lookout, and Clifton, we expect to find original open masonry fireboxes, the kind built decades ago with a real flue running straight up through the house. Those fireboxes burn wood the old-fashioned way, which means they also build creosote the old-fashioned way: a slow, sticky accumulation along the flue walls that thickens with every fire and, if ignored, becomes the kind of glazed, hardened deposit that’s genuinely dangerous. Sweeping one of these chimneys properly means a full rotary or hand-brush pass through the flue, smoke chamber, and firebox, not just a quick once-over near the damper.

Head out to Mason, West Chester, or Blue Ash and the picture changes. Many of the newer builds in these growing suburbs run gas fireplace inserts instead of open wood-burning fireboxes. Gas doesn’t produce creosote the way wood does, so the buildup pattern is completely different — the concern shifts to soot on the glass, dust and debris in the venting, and making sure the burner assembly and vent path are clear. We still recommend an annual visual check even for gas units, but the sweep itself looks nothing like what we do on a Hyde Park masonry flue.

Because Cincinnati’s older neighborhoods tend to see more wood-burning use in winter, we generally recommend sweeping those fireplaces once a year, before the season’s first real fire — sooner if the household burns often or uses unseasoned wood. Homes running gas inserts can typically stretch that interval, but we still flag it for review at least annually. Every sweep is a flat-fee, written quote confirmed before we start — no surprises once we’re on your roof.

What's Included

  • Full flue, smoke chamber & firebox cleaning — brush-and-vacuum equipment sized to your flue, whether it’s an original Hyde Park masonry chimney or a newer build.
  • HEPA-contained dust control — negative-air containment and drop cloths keep soot out of your living space while we work.
  • Visual check during the sweep — we flag anything that looks off, from cracked liner tile to a loose gas insert connection.
  • Flat-fee written quote — confirmed before we start, whatever your home’s age or fireplace type.

Yes. An open masonry firebox, common in older Hyde Park and Clifton homes, needs a full brush-and-vacuum of the flue and smoke chamber where creosote builds up. Gas inserts in newer Mason and West Chester homes don’t produce creosote the same way, but the venting and glass still need periodic cleaning and a visual check.
